Teenager with a 177 caliber air rifle.

Try some mothballs, spread out in random places.

A lot of the deterrents just chase them around the yard. I ended up using a live trap and taking them for a drive, never to return. Apples were my best bait.

A single trap or multiple? Whole apples or sliced work best?

One live trap should do it, you just need to put it where they can find it.
Apple slices in a trail leading to inside the trap. They would steal them one at a time making them comfortable enough they would enter to get that last pile of apples.

Quick story. Deer hunting under a favorite oak tree watching a field. Had two apples to snack on and as I finished each I tossed them to the side into a bunch of leaves. After a few minutes I heard something approaching and hoping it was a deer I turned to look into the woods. Here came a red squirrel, stopping every few feet to sniff the air. Straight to on of the apple core, grabbed it and gone. A few more minutes and he repeated the process zeroing in on the second apple. Two lessons. When deer hunting always pay attention to which way the wind is blowing and squirrels really love apples.

My trap is about 12"x12"x30 inches.

Happy hunting
Bud

PS, if you don't have an obvious place to put the trap put a few apple slices in different places to see which ones disappear.
