I had some questions about putting stuff up against the side of my house.
My side yard is a terrible disaster of roots, dirt, random plants, etc. This side yard gets no sun and my next door neighbor's house is overgrown with plants. Basically, in between our two houses is super inviting to skunks/opossums/raccoons. We set up a video camera and almost every other night one of these animals uses our side yard as their highway to travel the neighborhood. I know I can't control that, but I would like to "pretty up" the side yard and also deter animals from wanting to go there.
I originally wanted to put down gravel/rocks, but my husband is really concerned that it might cause drainage issues or become a breeding ground for termites. There is already a natural slope away from the house. We don't currently have flooding or seepage into the basement. I just don't want to do something that causes those types of issues.
I'd like a cheap and easy solution to just throw something down in that area to make it look better. Rocks? Mulch? How much mulch? What type of mulch? Woodchips? I have no clue. I don't really do much gardening/landscaping projects.
Here is a picture of my sideyard. Half of the house is siding/half is stucco.
