Drainage layer behind new retaining wall: RCA vs. gravel?

Hi,
I'm planning a 4ft high retaining wall in my yard and I need a vertical drainage layer behind it (stone wrapped in filter fabric, with a perf pipe at the bottom that drains via gravity to daylight). The local material supply has 3/4" washed gravel for $55/cuyd, and Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) for $35/cuyd.

Does anyone have experience with using RCA as drainage stone behind a retaining wall instead of washed gravel?
Pros/cons?
All advice appreciated.

Regards,
Theodore.

Ayuh,.... It'll be good material, so long as the fines are screened out,....
Like the washed stone, only screened,....

Should be as good as crushed stone, if the fines and dust is screened out first.

On a side note my county used this as a road surfacer years ago, but left the re-wire bits in the concrete materials.

This caused a lot of ruined tires for the residents of that area, and the county was out there with a giant magnet dragging along the road for weeks, and kept getting pieces of wire out of the road.

Did they ever mess up trying to use the recycled crushed concrete.

So make sure that you get screened recycled concrete. and you will be fine.

If the RCA is washed, it would likely work fine, although I have to admit I've never seen it washed here. That said, the washed stone we have here is far easier to work with and far smoother, so it would be less likely to damage the fabric while you're working with it.
