Craftsman lawnmower

I have a "skirt" on the rear of my lawnmower, it ripped off, do i need this part??? What does it do?/ Does it prevent rocks from being picked up and hitting my legs???
thanks
Barry

Exactly; it is there for your safety, and should be replaced. Additionally, it seems that its' absence could affect the air flow, which in turn could affect performance.
