Crab Grass Treatment

I had new sod put down 1 year/season ago. I did 1 Lb application of high nitrogen fertilizer 2 weeks ago (Mass). I've seen improvement greening up but I've also noticed a bunch of crab grass and I didn't put down pre-emergent and it looks like the seedlings have opened up. Backyard definitely looks better than the front. Trying to be patient as its a relatively new lawn and still only May. Planning to let it grow out to 3-4" before mowing.

Is it too late to do a crabgrass pre-emergent?

Any reason to aerate or should I wait until fall and overseed too?

Does this look like a normal green up? Front is more shady and its Kentucky bluegrass.

Neighbors all look much better but are established lawns. I'm watering 1" a week. Thanks!

Doesn't look like crabgrass to me; blades are too thin/fine. Compare to images at:

Try looking at these images and then buying right product at store. I think your lawn looks pretty good actually. https://www.google.com/search?q=gras...N29KjaNE6PM%3A

Re: Crab Grass Treatment

Great to know- thanks! I just did my first now so it looks better with the tips cut down now. I'm going to give the front another week or two to see if it greens up more- it's starting to look better.

I agree, it doesn't look like crabgrass - crabgrass goes to seed in the fall. If you see any of your grass turning a light purple this fall, it will likely be crabgrass. The wonderful government here banned all herbicides for domestic use a couple of years ago (meaning all of our lawns are slowly going to he!! without pretty much professional care) but if memory serves, you would be too late for pre-emergent treatment anyway. About the only thing we can do now is use a bagger in the fall to try and capture the seeds.

Re: Crab Grass Treatment

So the front is definitely starting to look better now. It still has some thin areas where it doesn't feel like I'm mowing anything. Back is doing great. Pictures look a lot better than in person!

Re: Crab Grass Treatment

You will know Crabgrass it takes over your lawn - like Kudsu. I'm in Greenville, SC and hard to find something to kill it out.
