This past week 12" circular patches of really rough grass started coming up. It's real thick and when you walk over them you can feel the bump upward. It's also not as pleasant barefoot as it has a stiffer stalk after cutting. It also appears to go to seed easily - I just cut it 3 days ago and it's already has buds on the ends an splits 3 ways.

Any ideas?

Looks to me like someone or something took a leak there. Or maybe extra fertilizer.

I'm guessing it might be a sedge family grass.
Google: sedge grass in lawn and then look at images.

I thought it was crabgrass. No expert here, but that is what I call mine and each stem puts out thousands of seeds.
