Circle Island Ideas Needed

Hey Folks,

Need some dire help. My wife and I will never agree on what to do with this island. Hoping you all can share some ideas of what we should do with this island. History has been I do something then told... "what you should have done"...

A few years ago I tore out a large Pompas ornament grass that was in the center along with some overgrown sand cherry bushes and some sorry perennials. All that stands now in the center is a Crimson Red Maple that will one day shade our home against the morning sun.

Some details. We are located about 5 miles from the shores of Lake Erie in a western suburb of Cleveland, Ohio.

20 ft. diameter
Full Sun
Need drought resistant
Deer Resistant
Mostly shrubs wanted
Some perennials are OK.
NON-Symmetrical Design
LOW MAINTENANCE

Would greatly appreciate any sketches with plant names that people would care to share.

You could Google 'deer resistant shrubs' to see what suits you and what will grow in your area. The list is not extensive. One caution is that some sites include Butterfly Bush which is considered invasive in many areas.

Another thought could be to leave it as a bit as sitting area as in your photos. You could dig it down some more and fill it with pea stone or even bark chips or coloured mulch which would be cheaper than pavers.

Re: Circle Island Ideas Needed

Thanks for your input.

Our problem is making a decision of What and Where to put things. There are plenty of choices at local nurseries and such. But, seeing that it is a focal point looking out from our family room and from the far back yard, we just want the perfect look. This we have not yet been able to come up with ourselves.

With the cost of shrubs and such, not to mention the work involved, would hate to make the investment and then say... Well that sucks... try again.

Just need someone with an eye for this type of thing.

Ha Ha!! you sound like my neighbor. If it had not been mounded up like a pitchers mound over the years I might do that. That would be lots of work of moving soil. thanks for your thought.

What do you want to do with it in terms of - look at it as a beautiful focal point, or sit in chairs in it & look at the trees, or entertain, BBQ? Do you want flowers?

Here are some "tough as nails perennials" for your USDA hardiness zone, 5b-6a. It lists the plants. You wouldn't have to get the plans. There are some plans that are more shrubs than perennials.

It's supposed to be low maintenance. I'm sure the colors wouldn't be quite so girly, someone has enhanced them.

I saw a gorgeous garden in a city nearby, that was mostly junipers & cypress.
This is the only similar representation I could find. It depends on what you like.
