Bush ideas for flower beds

I'm just looking for simple opinions and suggestions on what to plant in my flower beds. On the right side of my stairs (facing front of house) I already planted 2 dwarf gardenias that supposedly will only grow up to 3'x3' which is about perfect for that side since the yard slopes dramatically from right to left. I'm looking for another low maintainance bush that gets a little taller on the other side. I want to be sure it's not something that will grow out of control and my wife would like something that will bloom flowers like the gardenias.

Any of your liking of the many lower growing Varigated Uranimous Japonicas.
The Japoicas have year round color and really don't need blooms.

Thanks for correcting the pic.

They will be planted on the north facing side of the house. Is that enough shade fir these? I like the yellow leaves.

In the close proximity to the house on the north, if it sets due east/west they will get early morning and late afternoon sun until about September 21 then mostly shade until March 21.

I recommend researching their shade / sun likes and dislikes and possibly visiting with a knowledgeable nurseryman.
