Burning out a stump... will gear lubricant burn?

Have a big stump that has been a bear to work on. Dug down about a foot around it, and cut all the roots I could see, and it didn't budge when I hooked my deisel van to it and yanked. Sledgehammer for scale in pics.

Started the burn method, with a trash can on top and a leaf blower at the bottom... still tough to keep the fire going. Also drilled a bunch of 1 1/4" holes in it, and used a bag of charcoal.

I had been using the leaf blower to blow across the base of it, with a piece of gutter duct taped to it... worked pretty good, but I think i'm going to put a elbow piece on the gutter, route it into the can, and have it blow straight down on the center of the stump.

I've read about using vegetable oil and used motor oil. I've been using diesel to soak, but I have a lot of unused gear lubricant from my tractor... anyone know if gear lubricant will soak into the wood and burn like motor/vegetable oil?

You need to dig further down, on one side of the stump, and locate the tap root which goes straight down from the trunk of the tree. Then take a reciprocating saw with a long pruning blade and cut thru as much of the tap root as you can. This should loosen the stump, and you may be able to jerk it out. I've done dozens that way.

Thanks, yeah I saw his video, but there are many videos/posts where people report it working very well.

Every case is different. Mine has burned a decent depression out of it... just need a bit more to get down below ground level.

Was just curious if gear lubricant will burn like motor/vegetable oil.

With all the digging you have done I see a lot of large branch like chunks that can be taken of with a chain saw.

Looks like someone already tried to burn it with little results.

Hmm. Never thought about trying to locate the tap root like that.

I was already going to buy some fresh pruning blades today to trim off some of the big edge roots while I continued to work on burning it... I'll shovel down one side and see if I can use your technique.

Thanks.

That would be me. I tried to burn it twice before, but not with a barrel stovepipe. That didn't do much of anything.

The barrel stovepipe method + the leaf blower 'did' get the stump to ignite and burn... made a barrel sized depression about 3-4 inches deep. Not sure how well it shows up in this picture. But it's really hard to keep the stump burning... basically have to be right on it with the leafblower on full blast, and sometimes it still dies out.

I'm going to try to cut off some more chunks today, and maybe tweak the burn method. Just need it below ground level so I can mow over it.

You have already dug it up.

Purchase a chainsaw and cut it up.

even a cheap one will do. $50.00

Re: Burning out a stump... will gear lubricant burn?

Thanks Ron. I have a chainsaw that I previously used several times to try and get it down... it seemed hard as a rock, but my chain might have been getting dull. I bought a HF electric chain sharpener, to try my hand at sharpening, and it didn't go well... but that's another story.

I picked up some new pruning blades for my reciprocating saw. Hoping by tomorrow I can trim off the edges and it will be burned down enough to cover. We'll see.

If you still want to burn take you chainsaw and make some slices down in the top to expose more wood surface.

Why not just hire someone with a stump chipper ?
Tell him how far down you want it chipped and be done with it.

Well I got it out.

Long story short, this was basically what worked:

I'll write more about the things I tried a little later.
