Black Froth in rain barrel?? (Warning: disturbing photo!)

Howdy all!

I went out and opened my rain barrel today and was disgusted to find it covered inside with black froth/foam. Any idea what this is from? Should I just empty it??

Looks like some black slime/fungus. No biggy. It shouldn't be too deep, you could probably just scoop it out. If you don't want it on your lawn anywhere put it in a plastic garbage bag, and throw it out. Just a suggestion.

I have been pulling water out of the spigot on the bottom and it was coming out pretty yellow, so I wasn't expecting clean tap water, but I also wasn't expecting a visit from the Green Slime Monster either!

What can I do to prevent this in the future?

Try 3 drops of bleach / liter of water. If that doesn't satisfy graduate up to 1/4 tsp / gallon. Also try draining and cleaning more frequently with bleach.

Apparently it takes WORK to maintain rain barrels!!! It was here when I moved in a few months ago, apologies for my ignorance.

Thanks all!

Being it was there when you moved in we don't know if it had been there possibly for months or years without any maintenance. Work, not really. Maintenance, yes some. And even after it has been cleaned you will probably experience some yellow water. I believe it it is caused by the Tannins in plant life found in our gutter systems. I sometimes collect rain water for use in lieu of well water for washing autos, windows etc. and the first from the gutter system is always yellow. That is used for watering plants.

No reason to apologize for ignorance. It's just something we're all plagued with at times.
