Back yard is full of weeds - 3000 sq feet - Excavated dirt - Sod OR Seed???

I have a backyard that has lots of sun, and it is 3000 sq ft
of nothing but weeds.

I am on the fence about going for sod vs planting grass seed.

I am in Northern NJ now and the temperatures have been in the high 50s Fahrenheit this month and will stay that way until June.

Should I sod or seed? Sodding will cost me $1000.00 which includes delivery and tax.

I have to till the backyard to get rid of the weeds and turn the dirt over,
then I was planning on flattening it out, then adding seed, then covering with a thin layer of Top Soil then watering the heck out of it day after day.

What steps should I take with regards to using Top Soil etc if I do the seeding route and what are your thoughts about sod vs seeding in this situation?

How fast do want lawn?
Do you have access to water to keep it wet?

Seed needs more water for a longer time than sod.
Sod gives you an instant lawn. Seed takes months for a full lawn.

Consider hydro seeding if you go the seed route.

Thanks for your help and info.
Hyrdo seeding is about .18 cents per foot and sod is
only .22 cents per foot. I would go with sod before hydro seeding
because the cost is almost the same.
My wife (the accountant) won't let me spend $1000 on sod so I have to go
with seeding.

No, you need to kill the weeds and then till to loosen the soil. Just till them up and they will be back quickly.

One thing to keep in mind with seeding is that you will be spending a whole lot of time nurturing the lawn for a couple years to get a nice thick lawn. Coming from someone who had their backyard regraded and seeded last fall (granted it was done a little late), I'd say sod is the way to go. Seed will have patchy spots and bare spots that you will be messing with for a couple years imo.

If your wife doesn't mind you constantly going to screw around with the lawn to get a nice perfect lawn (especially if you don't have a sprinkler system) and you don't mind devoting a whole lot of time to it, I say go for it. Our lawn is getting better (as long as the weed we have is annual rye vs quackgrass), but it's still going to take another year or so to get perfect. My wife says we should've just done sod and spent another $3k+ rather than me constantly screwing w/ the yard, and I'd probably agree in hindsight. We bought some sod for a few areas, layed it out, and in 2 months now it's thick, weed free, and looks like a carpet. It's MUCH easier to maintain grass than grow grass from seed. There are some parts of the lawn that look like sod, but most of it doesn't.

Keep in mind seeding has to be done at certain times. If you seed in the middle of summer w/ very hot temps you may not get good germination for cool season grasses. Growing seed is definitely not easy and takes a lot of patience and time.

Just got done doing some tilling and sod laying in the back yard, probably about 300 sq ft. I borrowed a small tiller from my parents and used that to turn the weeds over, raked them out after a day or two, and then smoothed it out with a steel rake. Went and picked up 32 rolls of sod for just less than $100 and laid them out. It's been three days and it looks pretty good. If I chose the seed route it would still look like dirt. When I first bought this house it was in the month of September, and I seeded. The next year the yard "looked like a country club" according to my neighbor at the time. Sod is instant gratification and seed takes months.
