Aerating a Lawn

I am planning to aerate my lawn. Do i need to have utility lines located or does an aerator run shallow enough that I shouldn't need to do this?

No need to.
Your lines are suppose to at least 18" below grade, hardly think your going to anywhere near deep enough to hit them.
