Backyard options

It has been a challenge to look for the right plants which stay alive all around the year and are colorful. I would need some help with that. I tried cacti but they died this winter.

The second thing is outdoor lighting. I am looking at several options. First one would be to get it done through professionals like the Outdoor Lighting Dallas
or DYI or get it done through a handyman.

Which would be most hassle-free and economical. Pls advise.
