Wife and I are at odds with counter heights

Basement remodel is going well until..... The island was built. I built the island height at 36". Granite will be installed on top, and in Ohio granite is usually 1 1/4" thick which will bring the island counter to 37 1/4" tall. I like the arms resting on the island at that height, it feels right for me at 6'3". She on the other hand is 5'6" and thinks the height is too tall. (I told her not to sit there) lol. I'm thinking of making her island stool a little taller, and all other stools will be standard size. There will be 6 stools on one side facing the wide screen. Do you think it will look weird if one stool is taller for her and other shorter people that come to visit? Or..... Am I just being to "anal" about the situation and build the dam thing higher to appease her?

Personally ,I think she is worried about nothing---however, You must live with her--so what you do about the little bit of height difference must be your call---

Me I would leave at the height that I am comfortable with.
Being at 6'3" myself I am sick of having to bend to prepare a simple meal, in my own kitchen.

Why the heck can't they make counters higher than 5 inches below the waist?

So have a few taller stools on hand for those height challenged family and guests.

But you have to live with your SHMBO, I don't.

Your decision is your own to make.

I remember them being built at 36" to top of counter. But, like de-nagorg said, you are the person that will live with the height and SWMBO...

Thanks for the input. I think I will make a stool to fit her so she won't B, and leave the rest alone as is. Thanks again!

My wife said that your wife is right. I didn't even read her the question.

With your arms resting on the counter she has 2 problems. The counter height is wrong for her and you are in her way. Admit you screwed up and cut it to standard height.

This is only for eating, not for prep work? If so, then stool height is a variable with which you can work and the answer may be a taller one for you versus a shorter one for her (I'm imaging there are three or more stools total).

If this is for prep work, resale value says you go with the lower height.

Your math failed you. The cabinet should have been 34 1/2 inches high. Then add 3/4 plywood top and granite to end up 36 inches.

It's a good thing she didn't fire you!

Yep, if she isn't happy about the counter height. There may be a room that seems to be colder at night.
