What should i use

I'm remodeling my walls in my living room, i'm replacing the sheetrock with 1x8 knotty pine tongue n groove boards. I would like to know if I should install some type of backing on the wall before I install the knotty pine boards. If so what would you recommend?

Horizontal, vertical? If vertical, horizontal strapping on the wall for nailers. Definitely vapor barrier, minimum. All walls because you don't want leaky air movement even in the inside walls. Use house wraps that stops moisture and close around nails.

Why remove the drywall?
I'd leave it.

Strapping on the walls plus the boards would be 1-1/2".

Big problems at doors and windows.

Using construction adhesive right on the drywall would be 3/4". Back band applied to door and window casings may help because the base board is now going to be 1-1/2" out from the drywall.

Excellent. Just nail them to the studs.
