What is this orange deposit everywhere

Help, there is this gross orange deposit all over this house we just bought. I'm thinking some sort of mold, but its everywhere, not just bathrooms. And its on walls and ceilings. But there is definitely more in the bathrooms. It washes off easily, its dry, crusty, and orange to orange white. Cant seem to insert a photo but there is a picture in my album of it.

Re: What is this orange deposit everywhere

How old is the house? If it is between 1840 & 1910 my guess is Calcimine paint.
What is called rabbit paint the South also known as Hide Glue paint.
If it is one of the above it will wash off with warm / hot water.

Re: What is this orange deposit everywhere

The house was built in 1993. The stuff is like a scale, not a dust. Its dry. And its everywhere - walls, ceilings, fixtures. but not that thick everywhere. And its only on the top of the shower curtain rod, not on the underside. Its also on the shower curtain itself. It washes off with warm water but does leave a slight stain on the white walls. Mostly I'm concerned because my daughter lives here and is 5 months pregnant so want to make sure its not unhealthy for her and the baby.

Whatever it is, it doesn't look good.

Have you taken a register cover or two off of your duct work to see if the same material is in your duct work?

I would get a testing company out there yesterday and as a precaution, I would not occupy the home until I knew what was going on.

Re: What is this orange deposit everywhere

It could also just be airborne dust and dirt that has been deposited on the surface after the moisture has dried, particularly if there were smokers in the house. The humidity of bathrooms will 'aerosolize' and pick up any impurities that are in the air then condense on surfaces where it dries. Same in kitchens but that will normally contain more grease.

But as mentioned, best to have it checked to be sure.

Does anyone know if it takes a pool of water around somewhere to grow Serratia? We are warned about water sitting out very long in the hospital because of Serratia..

I'm not familiar Nik but the interweb says it is a common hospital-based concern. I figure standing water is a good breeding ground for any number of bad things. I try to avoid it unless it is sterilized with single malt whisky, but then it doesn't seem to stand for very long (sometimes, neither do I . . . )

It does rather look like sawdust. What repairs to the house do you figure they did before selling it ?

Who knows...By the time I'm done just trimming out a house many times I use a shovel to clean up the mess around my cut station.

Chop saw, table saw, router, sanders and sometimes the planer too.

All of that makes one heck of a mess in the immediate area not to mention what gets trampled and blown all over the rest of the house in a major remodel.

I stay on top of my messes ....but....just saying.
