Space above Kitchen Cabinets

Hi everyone. We're remodeling our kitchen. Presently, we've added 18 inch stacked cabinets to the top of our existing 40 inch cabinets, but there is still 19 inches to the soffit. We haven't added molding or crown, yet. What do you all recommend?

Re: Space above Kitchen Cabinets

The cabinets above the existing cabinets (the ones that are going
to have glass inserts) are 18" high?
They don't look that high.

The kitchen is beautiful, and elegant. More cabinets on top
of the glass insert ones -- will make it look cumbersome.

And because of the height (if you pile on more cabs)
you would need a ladder to get to anything that you store in there.

Not only is it a pain to have to 'ladder-up' to get something out,
it's dangerous as well.

I know a woman that fell off the ladder and broke her ankle trying
to dust on top of her fridge.

I would put a nice crown molding on top of the cabinets,
and call it a day.

Maybe some dimmable LED strip lights behind the crown moulding to create some indirect ambient lighting.

Crown and call it done or maybe some dust catchers to make the little woman happy.

You might as well throw away anything that you would store in another row of cabinets as you are never going to climb up there and get it down.

Re: Space above Kitchen Cabinets

Colby, what are the dust catchers to make the little woman happy?

We built our kitchen so we made the molding on top of the cabinets
removeable for easy access to clean the tops of the cabs.
It gets very greasy up there...we also line the tops with newspaper.

For the dogs?? I like the idea of crown, although you will really need some skills due to the inset/outset of the different cabinets. Installing rope lighting or LED low ambiance lights up there will make a big difference.

Re: Space above Kitchen Cabinets

No, for the grease that settles up there...lots of yucky
grease...it's easier to pull off and replace paper than
scrub tops of kitchen cabinets.

Son in law did lights inside his crown molding in their
family room...if you don't have perfectly floated ceilings.
every imperfection shows up.

I have no dust collectors on top of my kitchen cabs, however,
have lots in other places...too many actually.

The OP's new kitchen is sleek, and elegant, with clean lines,
it needs no dust collectors up on his cabinets, just moldings.

I would be happy cooking in that kitchen! who wouldn't ...
