Sound deadening drywall vs MDF

I'm replacing paneling in my living room and as part of the remodel we are installing a 65-75' TV on the finished wall. The problem is, the only wall that will accommodate that size TV separates the master bedroom from the living room. So, terms of soundproofing, would MDF be better Than 1/2 or 5/8 drywall?

About the only thing you can do to deter sound movement between walls is to uncouple the walls, but that isn't always easy to do. I would install Roxul Safe 'n Sound insulation between the stud bays to help as best as it can. Sound travels through hard connections, ie. sheetrock attached solidly to studs with sheetrock on the other side.

Going to have to crack some eggs if you want to make an omelette.
Whole lot of extra work to do this right.
All the sheetrock needs to go.

Seal the outlets and switch boxes and put another layer of sheetrock on using a whole lot of the green glue goop.
It won't be silent, but it will cut down on the sound transmission.

Re: Sound deadening drywall vs MDF

The previous suggestions are excellent ideas, if you can add thickness to the wall and it's in your budget, sound deadening sheathing panels (they are a 'low density fiberboard' available at Home Depot and probably other places) behind MDF is another option. The sound-deadening insulation in the wall will help, too.

If your budget and/or space is limited, as a minimum, I suggest a bead of roofing mastic on the studs as a cushion before attaching a layer of MDF and then adding a sound-deadening insulation between the studs.

Just go the lead wall route like they do for radiology departments. That way you can do x-rays with it too! Haha just kidding.

Insulation would definitely help and the ideas above would help a ton. That's a tough one just because it's the immediate wall to the bedroom.

Sounds like for what you're doing / needed I'd install Roxul Safe 'n Sound insulation and be done with it.

Another way to go is simply to remove the sound from that wall by using a bluetooth or wired remote speaker system. The speakers that come with TV's these days are pretty lousy anyway.
