Should I remove parging behind shower tiles?

I have a layer parging behind my shower tiles that has gotten water damage and has deteriorated in spots. I am planning on installing a direct to stud shower enclosure but there's no studs. Should I remove the parging and add studs or should I try and repair parging and glue/anchor to that?

Looks like it maybe a gypsum based plaster that was applied 30 / 40 years ago.
If it is Gypsum it should be removed to test it remove some and place it in some Vinegar if it dissolves all but the sand it is Gypsum.
