Ripped up bathroom floor found black mold?

I was going to tile my bathroom this weekend. When I pulled the old floor off it had a pergo floor on top of a linoleum floor. Under the linoleum floor I found this black stuff all over. I’m not sure if it’s black mold or not.

Re: Ripped up bathroom floor found black mold?

I always liked this blurb from the Family Handyman:

Is it Mold or Dirt?
Most mold is unmistakable, but sometimes small or largely hidden growths just make a surface look dirty. A quick test for mold can be done when you dip a swab in diluted bleach (1 part bleach, 16 parts water) and dab it on the wall. If the spot quickly lightens (or keeps coming back after cleaning), assume it’s mold. Mold test kits are available that detect the presence and identify the type of mold, but they won’t help determine the cause or what to do about it.

The question is where is the moisture coming from that is causing the mold? Get yourself a moisture meter at Home Depot ($20-$30). It has sharp prongs that you poke into the wood. If the wood is dry then it may have been a leak a long time ago. If it is old then purchase Concrobium, drench the area and let it dry. This will destroy the mold and make a barrier. If the area is wet you'll need to find a permanent solution to keeping it dry. Also, just because mold is black doesn't mean it is black mold. There's a boatload of different molds.

Laminate in a bathroom was just a bad idea.
Any water leak and the water will be stuck between the flooring and the subfloor.
What's below that floor?
If it's a crawl space, was the a vapor barrier over the dirt?
When you cut out that old floor replace it with Advantech, not plywood or regular OSB.

Are you highly allergic to mold? If not, determine if something is leaking still. If so, fix it. If no longer leaking, remove and replace or spray with concrobium. If allergic, have someone who isn't allergic to it take care of it.

Mold and mold spores are everywhere. If you aren't highly allergic to it, it's of no concern.
