Replacing paneling withdrywall.

Hi! Remodeling my living room, ripped out old paneling to install drywall. The fireplace brick hearth extends flush to the adjacent wall and was installed AFTER the paneling. So I have a section of paneling trapped between hearth and studs. Hearth is 14" high by 16". How should I install drywall over this? How would I finish the drywall to hearth joint? The bricks are rough used bricks. Thanks!

I think I've got it figured out. I'll dig out the old mortar and make a smooth line with fresh mortar, then cut the drywall to fit. Is there a way to remove your own post?

Or make the slot bigger with a grinder and diamond blade so drywall will fit behind.
