Removing paint on kitchen cabinets to restore wood surface

I purchased a house built in 1962 and the kitchen cabinets are wood with paint over them. I'd prefer wood cabinets. I noticed today that the paint can be peeled off... though it would be tedious and time consuming to peel it off, besides that, my fingernails leave scratch marks in the wood. Furthermore I'm sure the cabinets are less than 100% under all this paint. So I went about it for a while taking the paint off the back of one of the doors. About 30-45 minutes for a 1 square foot area jut peeling off with my fingernail.

Do people suggest I get something to aid with taking this paint off?
Should I not consider this without sanding down/off the finish that's on there now?

I can restain it I suppose but won't scratch marks show up when I go to restain it? Do I need to take the current stain off first?

Just trying to figure out how to accomplish my goal of having nice wood finished cabinets. I am a total novice when it comes to working with wood.

You must have RAW wood in order to apply stain---so you will not be able to stain this without a lot of sanding--to remove the paint--old varnish and old stain---

This is a huge job---and rather expensive ,even as a DIY job----

As a wood worker,I would be more likely to make new doors---however,you do not have the tools or skills for that---

The paint is pealing off because the old varnish was not prepaired properly for the new paint---you might find that some of the doors or the boxes do have paint stuck properly---making removal of the paint rather difficult--
