Painting bead board

Bought 3/8 wooden bead board to put up on my walls. When I applied prime to my first board,it dried with all this "furry" type layer, so I lightly sanded the next board with 220 grit, and tack clothed it, put it did not seem it smooth out the surface.
What should I be doing???
Thanks, Barry

Re: Painting bead board

You say "wooden bead board". Can you be more specific? Sheets? What kind of primer?
In general I would suggest to apply some Zinsser primer, then sand lightly and then paint.
You're probably using a waterbased primer without a lot of solids and it's raising the grain. That's ok .Just lightly sand.

Re: Painting bead board

The boards should be sanded first. Wipe with wet rag to raise the grain, let dry and sand. Apply 1:3 shellac-alcohol which will stabilize the surface more. Sand again then use the primer. I think your boards are too soft and the surface fibers are worn out or machined with dull knife at the factory. You locked in the rough texture with primer and it will need more sanding to smooth out.
I may return the boards and look for better quality material.
