Need ideas to fix huge gaps between window and tub wall

I'm re-tiling our main bathroom, and in the process of knocking out all the old tile, I found a couple issues (because of course I did). The first was that the previous owner(s) put cement backing board *over* the drywall, so that's all going to come out since it has allowed mildew and small amounts of black mold to build.

The main issue I am dealing with at the moment are the two massive gaps on the sides of the window. Each is a few inches wide. Two parts to this question: 1) what is the best way to close these gaps, and 2) as I'm tiling entirely around the window, should I be putting backing board on the inside edges that connect to the windows before I tile that space, or is that not needed there? Nothing existed prior beyond drywall.

Not a tile guy so of little help with that. I see this often in older homes, my best advice is remove the window and be done with it. It will likely always be a issue with water intrusion, rot, and mold.
If removal is not a option be sure the window is flashed properly. At least that will give you a chance.

I agree, is the window absolutely necessary?

I have seen those bathroom windows cause massive mold and rot issues.

If necessary, replace it with a vinyl framed one that won't mold and rot, and use that liner material ( redgard? ) for waterproofing shower walls before tiling.

Our best tile guys will be along to advise better than I can.

I see this far to often, someone removes an old window, does not know vinyl windows can be ordered made to size with no up charge and does not want to wait two weeks for one so they take what they can find on the shelve at the box store.
Your missing the jamb extensions.
I'd also be pulling out that stuffed in fiberglass and using low expanding foam instead.

Unfortunately, the window has to stay as we would have to alter the exterior, as well, and that's not possible at this time.

Then, re-do the insulation as recommended. Fir strip out the wall surfaces around the window opening (watch out for the 3/4 wood I see poking out) all while figuring on installing backer board and your tile in the opening. You want the finished tile edge to come out passed the window casings at least a 1/4".

Make sure the tile does not touch the window's casing wood( leave a 1/4 " expansion gap) Use color matched caulk to fill in the expansion gap.
