Need advice on Toilet choice

Hello all
I just joined so not sure where to post this. After 30 years in our home we are updating our main bathroom. We are doing the work through Lowes and as such need to buy through them or they won't install/warranty the job (actually said they won't install someone elses fixture period). I really wanted a Toto Drake but I would have to pay more for it and again I wanted the whole job done by them and guaranteed. Soooo-not getting a Drake - my next choices (at Lowes) have been between AS Champion 4, AS Cadet 3, or Kohler Kelston. I've not seen a lot of reviews on the Kelston but those I did see were a lot better than the Cimarron. So that being said , out of those three what would you recommend and why?
Thanks again

why would you have lowes who hires the cheapest workers do work in your home? have you had anyone you know use lowes and is happy with the outcome? when you say warranty the work, for how long and against what?

I also agree.

What Lowes is basically doing is extortion....you have to buy from them or no go.

Setting a toilet is one of easiest jobs one can do. The Drake Toto is a great toilet and I see no reason to compromise quality because of Lowe's.

I'd tell them to pound sand, you are getting someone else......then watch how fast they say "Well, after reflection, we will do it".

Re: Need advice on Toilet choice

I'll add to the chorus here and say run from Lowes. That will also give you the option of getting the toilet you want. As far as the American Standard 4 had the Kohler Cimerron, I've owned both. The AS4 flushes better than the Kohler but I had trouble with the tank leaking past the mounting bolts- could have just been a dud. The Kohler seems to have a better system to mount the tank to the bowl making it less likely to leak.

the toto is a great toilet, anything you buy from any big box store is usually second grade stuff, so if you go with lowes your already starting out unhappy you cant put what you want in your bathroom..

In answer to your question, I sit on a Kohler (purchased from Lowes) at least once a day and love it.

Re: Need advice on Toilet choice

When it comes to toilets toto sets the curve.
toto drake = $241
champion 4 = 244.65
cadet 3 = 202.50
kelston = 290

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Toto-Drak...3S01/203759617

kohlers nice but in my opinion they are always just a little bit overpriced.
the cadet is the next step down its like comparing a car to an suv. the other three are competing products and you would prob be happy with any one but if you want to poop in the best its toto.

when i did plumbing we had suppliers that had show rooms they were significantly cheaper than the big box stores. find a reputable plumber that has done a lot of service work they can tell you which toilets they have to fix the most and help you pick out the best one for your situation.

Re: Need advice on Toilet choice

Jobs done by homedepot or lowes will be the least quality allowable under the law, and what each trade can get away with - what can't be seen or covered over when you're not there and don't know anything. Paper trail from them is great, but it's to cover themselves. Their jobs will be hit and miss. Insist before you sign, a dozen flushes to check for leaks, new shut off valve, and absolutely no scratch on the fixture. If heated seat or bidet, you must have a gfi outlet under the toilet.
I'd suggest you go visit some plumbing fixture stores, although they are becoming fewer. They may even recommend a plumber. My problem around here is that the stores still operating only sell high end items.

Re: Need advice on Toilet choice

I'm with ZTman . . . remodeled both baths and installed 2 Kohler Cimmerons,
ADA compliant naturally, with CHURCH soft close / removable covers.
Couldn't be happier.

To some of us, who may eat more meat than the average man, there is a little bit more to it than that.

Re: Need advice on Toilet choice

Some of the comments about the toilets at the big box as compared to the same model bought some where else are rather silly.

Most toilets today are very good, with the possible exception of the $99 models.

We have a Toto in the master from 2002, great flush. An American Standard from 2003 in powder room, worst flushing ever, hate it. An American Standard Champion (Lowes), 2-3 years old, great flushes, better than our old Toto.
