I'm Getting Worried

Good morning,

I've hired a contracting company in my local area. The demo was done last week on the kitchen and master bath. I now have a completely demolished kitchen and bathroom that has been that way for a week. The only materials that have been ordered are the kitchen cabinets. My GC was supposed to be taking a materials list to a "bid room" to try and get a discounted rate for such a large purchase. This was 10 days ago....every time I've asked him about how things are going with the "bid room", I get an excuse. He has now stopped answering my messages. The team is supposed to be here Monday to start work and he won't respond to requests for the subs information or when they are supposed to be here. Am I overreacting or do I have reason to be concerned? What do I do? Thank you!

How much money have you given him?

I would be concerned if you haven't picked out and ordered materials.

Re: I'm Getting Worried

It's not uncommon for contractors to work a few days, then leave for a few days. Then be come back. I don't like it, but it happens for various reasons.
What does your contract say about time to complete. I don't think he has really done any thing wrong at this point. If they are not there by 9 on Monday, I would be on the horn.

It sounds like you let the contractor start the job without firm pricing, at least on the mat'l side. Do some reading on this forum and you will see it's littered with contracted jobs gone wrong. And they usually start with a incomplete contract.

Good luck

What happened with your project? Everything you wrote about was a horrible red flag.

So far, the project is going well. They finished the built-ins and have moved on to the kitchen and bath. We are hoping it will all be done within the next two weeks.
