Help with removing very old linoleum under floor

I have a heat gun and have been removing some very old linoleum. I discovered that there is tile under the linoleum and whatever they used 50 years ago to stick the base to isnít coming off easy. Heat helps but itís brutal. It almost seens like they used a cement glue or something. Is there any sort of chemical that might make the job easier? I tried an iron and the heat gun and the heat gun was effective at removing the linoleum but not so great with the vinyl bare. Thanks.

Rent one of the machines that have a power driven blade to separate the flooring from the subfloor. Walk behind scrappers like the Bartell sell for around $1500 so the daily rental should be less than $100. With the 9" wide blade the work will go pretty fast.
Slower is to use a scrapper on a pole or if you have a SDS hammer drill (or you can rent one) there are special floor scrapper bits but these are 3" or 6" wide and so it will take a lot more time.

Are your sure the old flooring is not asbestos? Consider laying 1/4" luan plywood over the existing flooring and install your new floor.
