Grout or Caulk?

Hey guys,

Looking to redo the sealant in my shower and I don't know if this is grout or caulk. New to DIY and would love pointers on how to remove this and what to replace it with.

Any pointers on tools, what to buy, etc would be helpful!

It should be caulking.

Caulk, and look for a better color match.

Grout or Caulk?

It is hard like grout and doesn't peel away. How do you get this stuff off?
It's also cracked, as you can see in this pic. Does caulk crack?

Like I said, I'm new to this, so thanks for the insight, DIY Gurus!

Re: Grout or Caulk?

Could be grout, sometimes grout is misused in corners like that. It matches the grout in color. Could be old hardened latex caulk. It's not silicone, silicone doesn't crack, it gets moldy underneath and starts to peel.

To remove, get single-edged razor blades and a holder, and scrape in from both directions.

Re: Grout or Caulk?

Caulk, if you want it off, use a soap scum remover, cut it with a razor blade which will make it easier to peel away with a putty knife or chisel. After you got most of it, use an alcohol soaked rag to help ease the rest away. We commonly deal with this.

Re: Grout or Caulk?

The only thing I would add is that is a sloppy caulk bead. Sanded caulk is harder to lay down straight vs. un-sanded caulk. I fire tradesmen who leave a mess like that. Before you re-caulk, lay down some blue tape to get a nice straight line for the caulk. Yes, tape the vertical and horizontal. Caulk, tool it in with a wet finger, and peel away the tape. Amateurs might lay down too much caulk-----you want it thin where the tape is. Also, be SURE the tape is down tight, rub it good with your thumb, this will prevent excess from sliding under the tape. And when you peel off the tape, pull it away from the caulk bead, not towards it.

Rick....

Just honestly.... I am no great artisan.... but do you really tape off a caulk joint....?

I will say you need a good caulk gun with which you can lay down an even bead.

To the OP.... Just scrape it off and replace.

I sure do with tub/shower, back-splashes and in many cases where paint meets stain.

With tape and the proper technique you can achieve a caulk-line that looks as if it was factory.
