Flooring or painting first

I have to get some work done in the basement. I got an estimate from 2-3 people. 3 of them gave me a different price and there is a good difference of $500-1000.

I am thinking to hire one person for repair, and painting and the other person for installing vinyl planking water resistant floor.

Which one should I get done first flooring or painting? I know I have to get the repairs done first but repairing guy comes with paint too.

Thank you!

Re: Flooring or painting first

When I have worked on my own place, I do the painting first. Don't have to worry about drips or splatter on the floor.

You have baseboard trim to install (and maybe remove) ? Where is that on the list ?

Re: Flooring or painting first

Installing baseboard would normally be after the floor is installed.

If its paint grade baseboard, I like to paint it before install. Then a quick coat after install. Others might just paint it after install.

Re: Flooring or painting first

When it comes to finishing you start from the top down - flooring is last.
It's generally easier/quicker to touch up the walls than to have to cover up the floors to paint. Unless it was my fault, I always charged more if I had to paint new construction after the flooring was installed.
