Exterior Door Replacement - rough opening smaller than specs

I have an exterior door I am replacing. When the old door is out, the rough opening will be 33.5" wide. A standard 32" door calls for 34.5. What can I do?

Usually the rough is 2" wider than the door. If your jacks are exactly plumb you may get by with 1.5".

Otherwise widen the opening or buy a 30 inch door.

Measure the jamb, its probably 331/2" you might be OK if everything is plumb, try to beat the door studs over, a 1/4" might be all you need. have you checked the height?

Don't just beat on the studs. You may be weakening the header above or split/damage the studs, trim, esp where they meet the top and bottom plates. Maybe you can move about 1/8-1/4. Rest you will have to remove with a chisel and parts with a saw. Use cheap saw blade and saw through the nails. 1/2" deep at a time. Refasten the studs.
