Desperate for a fix for my stair railing requirement

Hello All,

We are in a world of hurt and hope you all can help us. We added an upstairs ADU (Accessory dwelling unit). The stair system is designed per the attached picture. As we were preparing to put the cable railing system in, we were told that for safety issues (California code), we need to have "a large honking post (newell)" or "area blocking" 6 inches from the stair lip on either stair doing the turn.

And therein lies the problem.

We want to put cable railing but the base of the railing posts are too wide (4 inches) so that when you actually have a 4 inch footing, the post ind up 6 inches INTO the stairs. That makes the stairs look very narrow, not to mention cheezy.

Everything we are considered looks awful. Does anyone have ANY ideas what we can do? Does anyone else have a similar stair system and what did you end up putting as railing? What about glass railing? Any design option there?

No need to tell us this is a terrible design. The architect we worked with NEVER told us any of this until it was already built.

How can we make this look even remotely nice. Whether we stick with cable railing, go to glass or wood rails (last option).

Why can't you make the Newell longer, and mount the base, on the floor at the bottom of the corner?

This will widen the stairwell, be a support for both directions at the same time, and still be a cable railing.

Re: Desperate for a fix for my stair railing requirement

Hi Ed,
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it doesn't solve the problem of the safety issue, which still requires me to "close off" that area inside the blue tape (see pics).

Or maybe I misunderstood your suggestion?

No need to close off anything on the treads, the post sits on the floor, and bolts through the stringers, to anchor it.

Re: Desperate for a fix for my stair railing requirement

Not that way, put the newel post, in the corner, where the upper stair stringer, meets the landing, and the stringer for the turned treads.

I can't do the graphics, (haven't taken time to learn the program), but if the corner newel is affixed to both the upper stringer, and the lower stringer, it will be solid, and out of the way of narrowing the treads.

And can be strung with the cables she wants.

ED
I looked at Greg's drawing again, and it will work, with a loss of the 3.5 inch of the 4X newel, but still acceptable, no one steps there anyway.

The only way to make that safer for people is to add a hand rail on the wall side too.

With the pie shapes, he is trying to narrow the stair case, to move traffic away from that area.

Re: Desperate for a fix for my stair railing requirement

Ok..Based on what you said and the pics why can't you create a post/wall using drywall; floor to ceiling, or wood for that matter...right onto the blue tape marks

Re: Desperate for a fix for my stair railing requirement

According to code it needs to be "closed off" right? so any material would work..the stairs are sound that corner's odd so its just a safety concern....(if you have children you might want to consider more though)

Re: Desperate for a fix for my stair railing requirement

I have had this stair case in a house, the problem is mostly guests that use the hand rail for an aid and actually run out of step at the corner and their feet slip out from under them. I think newer codes do not allow this sharp point.

Re: Desperate for a fix for my stair railing requirement

I think the problem is that the triangular treads are considered winders, and code is that minimum width of winders (at the inside of the turn) is 6". Those winders taper down to zero width.

If you paid for an architect to come up with the design --- did you already shoot it back to him to let him come up with a solution?
