Demolition of a chimney on a Sunstream home (Bay Area)

Hi, does anybody have any experience with renovating a Sunstream home? They are a common house built by the Gellert Bros. in the 50's and 60's +. We want to get rid of the fireplace and chimney, but the chimney stack is wrapped in stucco, so we can't make out if it's brick or something else? We wouldn't mind leaving the chimney as it is, but would like to remove the framing around the fireplace, and the fireplace/flue itself. Framing under chimney looks to be load bearing as there is a header, but these houses have the reputation of being over engineered. The neighbors got rid of theirs, but kept the chimney, but weren't concerned about code compliance. Has anybody out there done this on one of these homes? Thanks.

Can't help you with your question, but I was looking at Sunstream homes just to find out the location of them. The Bay Area is a big place.
One thing led to another, and I tripped over the maintenance instructions for a 1956 sunstream home. Thought you might find it interesting.

Thanks very much, that is interesting. There were a couple of pieces of Sunstream Homes literature nailed to the posts in the basement, but I haven't seen that one before. Not that much of it applies anymore, we've recently done a full renovation. Just need to get the chimney sorted now. Thanks again!
