Crown molding obstacle

Any suggestions for this obstacle? I am installing 38 spring angle crown molding.

Re: Crown molding obstacle

Do a return at the obstacle and move forward with another return on the other side if necessary.

Re: Crown molding obstacle

Yeah, that is probably a more sane thing to do. I was considering removing the cabinet door, popping off the face frame and shortening both of them.

Re: Crown molding obstacle

How tall is the crown? If it fits between the ceiling and cabinet door, do as chandler48 says. If it is taller than the space, can you cut the door down?

Re: Crown molding obstacle

First I would call the obstacle a protrusion. I can't tell from the photo how far the protrusion sticks out from the wall. Looks to be about an inch or two.

The "correct" way would be to make an inside miter where the wall meets the protrusion then make an outside miter at the outer corner of the protrusion. However, cutting a piece crown short enough to fit the side of the protrusion would be extremely difficult if not impossible.

Suggestion;
Hold a piece of crown up to the ceiling at the proper angle next to the protrusion. Mark the end of the crown along the outer edge of the protrusion. Cut a 6" long notch in the bottom edge of the crown at the angle marked on the end. Hold that piece of notched crown up to see how it looks.

You might shorten the door and fill in the frame so you can come out around the frame.
