Covering up a fireplace

We've owned a condo in southern california for 17 years that has a firplace. We may have used it 3 times in all that time. We decided it was a waste of space and decided to just wall it off and take out the hearth. Does anyone know if this is legal or safe? I shut and capped the gas line, used furring strips to attach drywall.

Re: Covering up a fireplace

It looks like you've done it already so probably a little late to wonder if its legal or safe. Too bad, they make nice focal and design points even when not in use. Interesting you say that you capped the gas since it looks like it was an open front firebox which I have not seen up here for gas use.
I would be capping the chimney or whatever the thing vented to since it remains essentially an open hope behind a thin layer of drywall. I don't know enough about you climate or building standards to suggest if you should have insulated behind the drywall.
A 'legal' consideration might also include any condo rules. You may be in the position of asking for forgiveness rather than permission.
