Cedar Plank Bathroom 😩

My house is 100+ years old and it has this horrible cedar plank bathroom that I can no longer stand looking for at. It goes around all 4 walls about 4.5 feet up from the floor and the one angled ceiling has it up and across the ceiling. The walls behind it are plaster and look to be falling apart. Without ripping all of the planks off the wall, can I just fill in the gaps and sand it smooth? The cedar is rough in texture and just obnoxious. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Not likely. If you are thinking drywall mud, it will just crack. Maybe even fall out.
You might consider skinning the walls with a thin drywall first. It would require less tape and mud.

+1 for drywall over the plank.. I used 1/4 to cover a room full of pine and it worked out perfectly...
