Basement ceiling ideas needed

Need to replace or improve my basement ceiling. Currently tongue and groove acoustic tile, made of particle board (for lack of a better term). They're dis colored from age and the previous owners smoking habit, and broken or missing from the times we had to get into the ceiling for other projects.

Replacing with a hanging drop ceiling is the most obvious way to go, but is there anything more cost effective? What about a glue and stick ceiling tile?

Pics are attached. Any ideas?

Anything glue and stick is never going to work.
I've just gone over it with 1/2 light weigh dry wall using both 2" screws and drywall adhesive.
Renting a drywall lift makes it an easy job.

Cost effective would be replacing damaged tiles, and painting the whole ceiling.

I recently did a basement ceiling using white solid soffit panels. We used the triple 4" panels from Mastic. Ran a J-channel around the perimeter and installed just as we would do a porch ceiling. It's bright, clean, easy to install, and easy to remove if ever the need arises. The client likes it so much that I'm contracted to do the same for his two buddies.
