Backsplash behind bathroom sink

Hello,

Is it a good idea to have a backsplash for waterproofing behind a half-bathroom sink, or is there something to make drywall more waterproof (sealant)?
I know they make 'green' drywall sheets, but would this be sufficient?

Thanks

Re: Backsplash behind bathroom sink

Backsplashes make for good splash protection and cleaning. Greenboard is more water resistant than standard drywall, but if you prime and apply a good paint to regular drywall, you should achieve the same protection.

Specifically a latex enamel [any sheen] they do a better job of repelling moisture than flat paints do. Regular drywall paints better than greenboard.

Doesn't your countertop have a short backsplash?

Re: Backsplash behind bathroom sink

Thanks for the replies, I still need to do some thinking on the setup for the small half bathroom. The current bathroom has tiles from the floor up to behind the sink. It's good to know paint adds some moisture resistance.

To me a back splash just makes it look better.

The added bonus is it helps with the splashing water.
