The notching was only to help me with the original plan which was to plane the rafters. I wanted to see how far I needed to go. When I realized how much had to come out, I changed the plan.

I like the 1x idea. Would the same thing work for the knee wall connection point? I was replacing it all because some were bowed and older wood. The plan was to replace both wall framing and pull the wave out of the corner of wall and rafter
