Re: Architect Responsibilities - Exterior Color

In my experience, the building owner has always had the responsibility for choosing colors. The Architect recommends materials not finish colors.

He may recommend the type of finish such as for metal flashing components he may recommend a Kynar finish but usually not colors unless that has already been worked out with the building owner when the specification is being written.

Many projects have been held up when picking colors even when a historical committee isn't involved.

"well unless your architect drawings are different from all the ones I've dealt with
they have a little stamp that relieves & assures themselves from most all liability...
in fact in my experiences involving renos and upfits; most make it up as they go
put it all off on the engineers & the MPE subs to work it out... just saying
doesn't surprise me your archer doesn't draw in color"

What is an MPE sub?

Re: Architect Responsibilities - Exterior Color

Around here thats what designers are paid to do. Customers can hire them apart from the architect to work as a go between... they help you pick out colors and finishes, products like carpet, tile, window treatments, etc. In some cases they work with the customer from the start and help suggest changes to the architects plans.

If you don't want to hire a designer, most of that is on you alone to decide... unless you have specified that the architect pick out the finishes, which I dont think you would want. Most people want to have a say in things.

Re: Architect Responsibilities - Exterior Color

Good replies, color selection process can be confusing on many levels. Here's what I do: steal colors. Yes, I just make note of a building that looks good to me, maybe take a picture. I do that because I know those colors already "work" together. One time, after we decided to repaint our own house, my wife knocked on the door of an old Queen Anne in the neighborhood and asked the Owner what the specific colors were. Actually, the homeowner was flattered and happy to dig out the old color chart. This way, you can by-pass a lot of steps with designers and paint stores. If the colors look great, someone else already put a lot of thought into it, that doesn't mean you have to also. I can't imagine they are copyrighted lol. In remodeling, time is money!
