Stairway wainscoting

Hello:
We're having a little debate on how to run chair rail for wainscoting up a stairway. The first option is to to up about 6 inches so that the size of the boxes will be the same as the first floor (stairway1 and stairway2 pics). The second option is to turn the corner and run the trim up the wall from that point. This leaves the sizes of the boxes a little smaller than the first floor (stairway 3 pic). We're running the standard chair rail with picture frame molding below for the wainscoting boxes. We're probably just being a little OCD about this but would appreciate any input. Thanks,

I always look at google and see what others have done, what ever you do, if it looks like it makes sense no one could tell it was wrong.

Re: Stairway wainscoting

In the first pic, lower your tape to be at the same level as the side molding
and wainscoting on top of the side wall.
This is how I envision it... No break when you look at the side wall
and the stair case wall at the same time....neat and clean.

Maybe Big Jim will see this and comment.

Lovely details in your house.

edit to clarify ...in them first pic remove that little piece of
tape that you have in an attempt to match the side wall
with the stair wall...

Re: Stairway wainscoting

Hello:
We plan to remove the piece of chair rail at the bottom of the stairs and replace it with one that wraps around the wall and up the stairs. It would be pretty difficult (I think ?) to get a piece of trim cut on an angle to match a 45 degree outside corner. That's the purpose of the small piece of trim (to turn the corner).
Thanks.
