Plywood Under Kitchen Cabinets

In the kitchen, I ripped up tile and I am having floor guy put in 3/4" brazilian cherry to match the rest of the first floor.

its expensive and i figure I would save around 800 bucks if i put plywood down under all the base cabinets.

should I just be running the 3/4 plywood to the toe kick, or should I go go a couple inches shorter to play it safe, so if they have to face nail the last piece they will not see it.

I am having the floors installed before the cabinets go in in 2 weeks.

Also was thinking would it be easier to level and shim the plywood that i am putting down so when the time comes for base cabinets, they will go in alot faster?

I don't know your cabinet relative to flooring configuration.... but I guess I would FIRST mark out my cabinet configuration on the floor, and ask my flooring people to just run under the toe kick at their convenience..... then SECOND come back and cut plywood to fit.

Plywoods cheap and easy to fit.... you don't want your flooring guys to have to be cutting and having to fit your flooring to your plywood.... might end up with 1" fillers etc.

Good going

Also, unless something very pecular in your flooring subbase... you don't level your plwood underlayment..... you shim and level each cabinet as they are installed

i know thats the way you install cabinets, but i just figured if you had a perfectly level floor to put your cabinets on it would go alot smoother when installing the cabinets.

was just a thought.

Re: Plywood Under Kitchen Cabinets

Well... I agree that if you had a perfectly level floor, install would be easier.

But your flooring people are not going to level your flooring..... so you would have a plywood sub leveled but not necessarily your flooring.... and you can not tell exactly how far out your cabinet toe kick will exactly extend.... unless your wall is exactly a plumb plane. Your flooring could be a different height than your cabinets sub floor, requiring more shimming and confusing your floor people

Good going.

Re: Plywood Under Kitchen Cabinets

I don't know about leveling plywood (don't bother), but running the floor a half inch or so under the toekick is a good idea. Don't forget to leave the DW, fridge and stove areas clear for flooring, too.

Why can’t the appliances have plywood under them?

The appliances could just have plywood under them instead of finished flooring but the finish flooring looks nicer [what little you can see] and is easier to clean.

Pre finished furniture grade plywood would work there.

If anything would be visible I would want it to match . If not just want it cheap. But prefinished might be better than plywood that would soak in any spills.

With unfinished you could stain to match and clear coat it.
