Personalized Carpentry Gift

Have you ever made a gift using your carpentry skills? I'd like to make something for my 11-year-old niece, and I'd like to hear about anything you might have done in the past, or at least some ideas you may have.

Thanks.

I haven't yet, but when my daughter is a few years older (she's 3), I'm going to be making her a toolbox. Something simple, open-top with a handle, dovetailed corners, hardwood. Seems like it might be age appropriate for your niece.

I built an arts & crafts style toy box for my mother-in-law's house, because they needed a place for my daughter's toys. Well, by the time it was done, we also had a son, and now there we're more toys than would fit in the box. Plan ahead, I guess.

Hm, I was thinking more about furniture, but I like the idea of a game board, so thanks oh'mike for that!

And ron45, that's a great list you linked to. I'll enjoy going through it all.

All kids like shelves--and if you add a secret hiding place--all the better---I've added that to a few items and the kids really liked it.

A wooden jewelry box will be a hit. At eleven girls are switching from dolls to jewelry and the like. I have seen my two daughters go through it...
