Normal mantle height above the floor; 54"?

what is the norm range for how high off the floor a mantle should be? not asking how far above the fireplace opening. I have heard 54". is that 54" to underside of mantle or to the top of mantle? I want to lower it some. I know some of it is preference but I have to sell some day and dont want it too low.

we are mounting a TV over the fireplace. there is no other place in the room to do it, so that decision is made.

even though it will be tilted slightly down, and we sit 12' away, we are planning to drop the mantle a few (4-6) inches to help with viewing angles

there is plenty of clearance above the firebox to the mantle today and would be even if we dropped it 10 inches. when I read "design" sites it says that 54" is standard height. is that 54" to underside of mantle or to the top of mantle?

our ceilings are 9'. the mantle today is wood and is right at about 58" off ground to the top of mantle; 55" to underside. the new mantle will be marble and 6-8" if anyone has that concern. I am thinking 50" to the underside and 52" to the top. sound fair?

Pics (as is) attached. blue tape is where TV would be if we didnt adjust the mantle. thanks

If you can find the instructions for a TV over the fireplace. And the one I have seem wanted the top of the mantle 14" above the fireplace and have it something like 8" out from the front of the face of the fireplace.
Before we had to consider the TV we always built the mantle height 48" above the deck that the fireplace was on. Either the floor or a raised hearth.

If that is an insert, then the manufacturer will have very specific instructions for the height of the mantle, assuming the mantel is combustible. The height allowed will depend on the width of the mantle (i.e how far it projects). No standard height that I have ever heard.

Local codes can come into play as well, best to check with the local AHJ.

gas inserts have the wedge on top for combustible and after that they don't care.

I don't know about any minimum or maximum height requirements, but the triangulation from the opening is described in this. It is showing 31" minimum to the ceiling, so with an 8' ceiling the highest you could go would be 65".

Never heard of that. I've done something like a half a dozen in the last few years, and every one has had something like this:

I think Neal is mentioning the overall clearance from the firebox to combustibles as dictated by the triangle stand offs on top of the firebox, not the mantel clearance to the opening in relation to the depth of the mantel.

OK, I see. Don't see how it relates to mantel height, but whatever....
