Mounting handrail

I've been asked to mount our handrail on the wall that has drywall hung over basement foundation wall (i.e. concrete). There's 3/4" spacing between drywall and concrete since 3/4" strips nailed to concrete were used to hang drywall. I know we'll have to drill into the concrete wall and use anchors. How do we attach the bracket or medallion without crushing the drywall?

Re: Mounting handrail

Consider cutting the drywall out in the area needed, fill in with a wood piece the thickness of the drywall attached to the concrete. Now you have a wood piece to glue a thin shop made wooden escutcheon, with routed edges, to cover that whole area and attach the bracket to those 2 thicknesses.

Re: Mounting handrail

You could use a 1x4 with rounded edges and the ends cut on the angle of the rise. Fasten the 1x4 to the lath then mount the rail brackets to the 1x4. Something like the picture below except use a 1x4 instead of a 1x6.
