Question

Laminated Particle Board how to attach edge ?

I have a very large Laminated/melamine particle board that I want to turn in to a craft table for my kids to stop them tearing up our kitchen table.

The edges are raw particle board and are about 2" thick. I want to band the edge with wood rather than laminate banding.

How should I go about attaching the wood as I want a very good bond. Given its particle board what are peoples recommendations for a good bond ?

Re: Laminated Particle Board how to attach edge ?

Thanks but I don't want to use iron on/glue on thin edge banding like the video preview appears to show. While I am sure I could get a nice edge using a laminate trim router. I tend to find that over time it will come off as the kids will always be leaning over it will work loose and then splinter the top edge.

He does go on to show a thicker edge and shots it with brad nails... So that might be an option...

PL Premium (polyurethane adhesive) should hold wood to particle board very well.

Bit of a problem is that it expands as it cures. Keeping the surface of the melamine clean can be challenging. I like to wait 30-40 minutes, the glue will be starting to set up, then you can scrape off any ooze rather than wiping (smearing) it off. Maybe wipe down with paint thinner after scraping. Once it dries, its never coming off.

2" thick melamine? Regardless, you could cover the edges with strips of hard or soft wood, using glue and either brad nails or biscuits.

If you want to insure that the iron on edge banding does not come loose on laminated particle board, coat the edge of the laminate with a light coat of wood glue and let it dry. Then iron on the edge banding. There is just not enough hot glue on the back side of flexible edge banding to fill the pours of the particle board. Coating edge of the laminate with wood glue fills those pours.
If you want use wood strips on the edge, do the same thing. First coat the laminate with wood glue to seal the pours and let it dry. Then coat the wood strips and the the laminate with another coat of wood glue, clamp and let dry.
Try it. First coat the edge of the laminate with light coat of wood glue. Let it dry then coat a strip of wood and the laminate again with wood glue. Clamp and let dry then try breaking the joint apart.

Depending on the use, the edge doesn't always have to be flush to the top. The image trim is universal but I see also thinner plastic channel types. You also don't need 3/4 trim piece, so if you see 1/4" slats or trim you can use, they can be hand nailed as well as with electric brad nailer. 5/8 brads, example. Glue to hold, brads to clamp while the glue is drying. Regular wood glue is also easy to wipe away with damp rag.

Thank you all for the tips, The board was dropped off today and wow its heavy.

The correct size is 1.5" X 97" X 61" I think I am going to have to borrow more bar clamps as I don't have enough to be able to clamp it along its long edge.

Yes, heavy isn't the word for that. Why so thick?

I'd consider adhesive and #6 Robertson trim screws.
