Interior Door Installation

Good morning, I am wanting to install an interior door at the top of the stairs leading down to the basement. My problem is, that the opening is only 81 inches tall and it seems that standard doors are 82 1/2. I could take out the drywall from the header but I doubt that will be 1 1/2 inches thick and make up the difference. Is it common to cut off a door to make it fit? Am I stuck with ordering a custom door ($$$)? Or is there a solution that I have not considered?

Thank you!

Thank you!

82 1/2 changes when you have a finished floor. The door itself is 80, the jam above it is 3/4 and you want a gap of about 1" below the door.
So you can count on 81 3/4 after you trim the bottom of the jam off.
remove the drywall and corner bead and you will be really close and maybe you don't quit get the one inch space at the bottom.
