Idea for fixing stair appearance

We have old stairs in our house that are beat up - especially on the risers. They have about 27 coats of old paint on them and are chipped and scratched like crazy. Rather than go through the trouble of sanding them down or stripping the paint and then using putty to fill, i was thinking about cutting some thin boards to size, painting them and then gluing them over the exisiting risers.

I'm hoping someone could recommend a good material to use. Something hard but thin so it won't stick out too far but not plywood as it won't cut smoothly. does anyone have any ideas?

Consider tempered Masonite or Aluminum sheet material from the local news print shop.

You need to make sure that you have the required step size by code in your community.

Formica countertop material is durable and cuts straight with the right tools.

It also is available in a vast amount of colors to suit any application.

Wood veneers but 1/8" hardboard or panels should work. You can cut panelling with a razor. 40 teeth or above saw blades and material good side down or if chipped, wood filler. Don't know how bad your risers are but primer and wood filler will smooth out the lumber.
