This shelf has to be supported from the bottom. I would use 'L' shaped brackets supported from as many studs as you can. Anchor the top to the studs securely as well, keeping in mind the top ones are mainly to prevent tipping.

Another reason it needs to be secured to the wall is the fact that there is no back to keep the assembly square. If not anchored to wall, it can fold up rather easily(parallelogram)
