European hinges with 1"x2" cabinet frame?

Hey guys,

I'm planning on building cabinet doors for my bathroom and kitchen to replace the builders grade doors that have seen better days. I want to use 1"x2" for the door frames. The European hinges seem to all require a 35mm hole, and it appears that this would fit into a 1"x2" frame but just barely. Just wondering if a 1"x2" frame is wide enough for these hinges. Thanks

If you are putting a panel in that frame with a dado at 1/4" deep, you are pushing your luck.

Yes, that was the plan.

It's been more than 20 years since doing one, so don't take my measurements as fact.
I think the gap from the edge of the door to the big hole is 1/4" and the hole is 1 3/8" so the far end of the big hole is 1 5/8 from the edge, that would leave you with 3/8" for that 1/4" dado in a 2" board. Should work.

I'm going to use your measurements and double check if this will work. If not, I'll just use variable overlay hinges, which is what are on there now. Thanks for your input.

Visually, would going with 2 1/2" rails work. Gives you a little more wiggle room.

What hinges are you using? The cup drilling distance is critical to obtain the correct overlay and prevent binding. Also, are the cabinets face frame or frame less? If face frame, you have much more fudge room because the doors will be far apart.
If frame less, and you want 3mm door gaps( this is what euro hinges were designed for) cabinet side thickness will also be a factor to include.

I haven't purchased the hinges yet. I purchased the 1x2 wood for the stiles and rails for the bathroom cabinet doors but that's as far as I've gotten. I was looking at switching to European hinges on the face frame cabinets, but started wondering if the 1x2 would be wide enough to accommodate the 35mm hole for the hinge cup. I'll probably just use some variable overlay hinges in the bathroom and then use wider stiles and rails when I start working on the kitchen cabinet doors.

The safest way to proceed is to buy your hinges and do a mock up of a door stile with the hinge mounted. Then you can determine your door sizes accurately.
