Different size door hinges on one door

Hi All,

Maybe a stupid question but can you have different size door hinges on the same door?

We have 2.5 inch inches, but the wife wants to install a self closing door hinge on a bathroom door so the door will close by itself so guests can't see the toilet when nobody is in there.

But, I can only find self closing hinges in 3.5" format. I assume this to mean that I would need to change all the door hinges to 3.5"...I can't seem to wrap my head around using different size hinges as to me their swivel radius would be different... And I can't seem to find anything online...any input?

Thanks in advance!

B

Hm ok thanks. So I will likely have to notch the door frame to do that I assume

If that isn't easy change the other hinges to size matching ones.

Re: Different size door hinges on one door

Yeah I am just eyeballing it now and I would have to cut out a decent chunk of the frame to get them to line up... I think will look better to change all three, even if it means a bit more work to enlarge the cutouts hinge on the door and the frame. To me this all seems like a useless project, have to see if I can negotiate my way out of this one...

You could adapt a storm door closer to do the same job, might look " rigged", but only you and yours will know.

Haha isn't that truly the way. Ended up buying some other 3.5 inch hinges now and in the process of finishing up the job... Pick your battles as they say...!

Pick your battles, sure, especially when you know she is right but let her think she won one.

Re: Different size door hinges on one door

Replace the hinges one at a time. Do it with the door in place. The most difficult thing is getting the mortises in the frame to line up with the mortises in the door. Measure, mark and cut the mortise in the frame. Install the hinge leaf in the mortise of the frame. Then with the door open, open the hing leaf to the door and mark where to cut the mortise in the door.

Then move on to the next hinge using the same procedure.

If you are using the 5/8 rounded corner hinge (the most common hinge). Mark your mortise 3 1/2" with proper back set. Then use 5/8" drill bit to make the rounded corner.

Re: Different size door hinges on one door

The important part is having all of the hinge pins line up (swivel radius match). Unfortunately it takes considerable skill to get the mortising correct for this even if the hinges were the same kind.

An error here will have the tendency to loosen the screws holding the hinges to the door and the jamb.

Re: Different size door hinges on one door

In my case it went pretty easily because I was just going to a bigger hinge, so I used the same middle screw hole on the mortise to line up the new hinges. Beyond that I used the new hinges as a template and then used a router to set the right depth for the now thicker mortise and did the cutout that way. My cutouts are a bit too big but I think once it's painted I'll never see it again

But agreed, going from square one with nothing pre-set I would no idea how to do...

Anyways thanks to all for their input.

Re: Different size door hinges on one door

You take a full five minutes to figure out a jig for the router with whatever straight bit you have and ten minutes to build it.
